I use it daily, twice a day to rewind tapings that I have done from the night before and then again, after I have watched them. It have haver failed me. Works great each and every time. This GE Slimline VHS Rewinder is good. It is nice to use this to rewind video tapes back to the beginning instead of having to use the VCR and wear out the heads! My only complaint is that some of our old blank media video tapes that are little longer, bigger and bulkier than most other VHS video tapes do not fit in the rewinder. Actually they fit but the rewinder door but very snugly and the door will not close, it just pops open and if you can’t get the door to close you can’t rewind the tapes. Excerpt: A control track is a track that runs along an outside edge of a standard analog videotape (including VHS ). The control track encodes a series of pulses , each pulse corresponding to the beginning of each frame . This allows the video tape player to synchronize its scan speed and tape speed to the speed of the recording. Thus, the recorded control track defines the speed of playback (e.g. SP, LP, EP, etc), and it is also what drives the relative counter clock that most VCRs have. A gap in the control track signal of a videotape usually causes a flaw during playback, as the player may loses tracking as soon as the track drops out. This usually leads to a gap in video and audio (since there’s no information as to what speed the media is recorded at), the VCR’s counter will freeze, and upon re-acquiring the control track, the video will sync roll. A control track error can also be caused by a “dropout ” – a defect in the magnetic particles on a tape – but this is very uncommon, as the control track is immune to all but the most severe tape damage. Each gap in the control track, no matter how brief, destroys synchronization and continuity, which can make a segment of a recorded video difficult or impossible to use for editing. I can’t believe how satisfied I am with this product. I didn’t expect so much for such a small price.
VHS play/record machines are really not designed as a rewinder due to the motor being really designed for the slower record or play speed. The rewinder is designed for this higher speed with endurance in mind. Save your VHS motors from a early burn out by using this rewinder by Ambico. PS: I have one thats been in use 7 years but what with having a small VHS library I thought it practical to buy an extra one now due to the obvious phasing out of the VHS format to DVD. Previous rewinders that I have had were of better quality. I don’t expect satisfactory life out of this unit. Its performance is barely adequate. I’ve had to manually hold it closed while it rewound the tape, on at least a couple of occasions. It appears it’s end of tape detection (presumably done by sensing tension (load) increase is too sensitive. Finally, previous rewinders that I have had were able to rewind my tapes faster than this one does.
I suspect the attempts at value engineering went to far and cheapened the quality to degrade the quality, performance and lifetime to the point where it is disappointing

Maxell VP-200 VHS Wet Cleaner I bought this wet cleaning system about 20 years ago, and it still works. I hadn’t used it in many years, but a friend asked me to copy his VHS tapes to DVDs, since I have a Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder, that records to both DVDs and VCR tapes. Since his tapes were old, they weren’t the best quality. I wanted to make sure that I got the most out of his tapes, so I dug around and found this cleaner. The bottle of solution had dried up, but it’s only alcohol, so I just used a bottle of regular rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol).
The Maxell unit still works, and I noticed improvement when I played his tapes, so I know it still works. The only thing that is better than using this cleaner is to open the DVD/VCR, and wipe the recording head with alcohol. It’s a quick and easy job, but this Maxell unit does a decent job. If the head was really dirty, I’d have cleaned the head by hand.
If you want to clean the head by hand, just take out the screws that hold the cover on the VCR, and remove the cover. That big, silver looking thing that is tilted on an angle, is the recording head. Just wet a cotton ball with alcohol, and wipe it all over the head. Make sure you wipe the entire head several times, using several clean cotton balls that are wet with alcohol. You can also wipe the rubber rollers that move the tape along to clean the tape residue that is on them. By the time you get the cover back on the VCR, the heads will be dry and ready to use.
